Does that hold true for git-specific UIs, or are you a CLI purist? (And if so, how do you actually remember what branch goes where and how do I learn this power?)

The latter, I think. Not really a purist per se? It's more like it my brain sees not CLI as more indirection and gets nervous.

I use vscode's git integration and then immediately go to GitHub to make sure it worked

Git extension in visual studio not that bad. Vanilla pull, commit stuff works ok. / and keeps me from flubbing it.
