1/ Most Big Intellectual names you recognize aren’t known because of their body of work, that was just their network seed crystal. You really know them because they become Schelling points for similar people, usually by deliberate action.

2/ That’s not bad. Hell, it’s useful — at a higher level, it’s self-organization. But the second you forget they know desperately little about the specifics of the far-flung things they tangle themselves into, you start to lose the plot.
