I like to think about "mental ecosystems". There's probably an actual fancy word for it, but I think it's a really good analogy for what we do inside our heads.

When the new piece of information crosses the ecosystem boundary, is it treated like a virus and attacked with all the defense systems? Or is it treated like a new treasure and we rearrange our stacks of boxes to make room for it?

We know we are "right" because our mental ecosystem is in self-harmony and balanced, everything fits and works and has a place. That weird piece of info from your ecosystem doesn't fit, so you must be "wrong", in fact that oddball thing a threat to the balance.
