how do smart / talented academics in [vague sweeping gesture] these Twitter circles feel about the general attitude of "wow it's a pity that you didn't go into something useful!" (sorry, I know that's harsh, and I don't *mean it* per se — rather, I'm characterizing the zeitgeist)

And really I still don’t think there is anything that lets you explore with anything resembling the same depth, even with sclerotic state of academia. But that’s where the not useful characterizations come from anyway — different loss functions.

So really I guess I just locate them on the less curious (exclusive) or more exploit/now-practical focused end of the spectrum. But if they’re an asshole about it, there’s a different spectrum entirely and it has nothing to do with curiosity or knowledge.
