John Conway is why I got a PhD in computational social science. His Game of Life was my first encounter with cellular automata and I thought it was just about the coolest most interesting thing I had ever seen. Still mostly feel that way. Thanks for the inspiration, Dr. Conway.pic.twitter.com/7JJwFdcpp6

Decades ago while working at a temp job in Memphis I got put in a job with nothing to do and dbase and lotus 123 to use so I wrote a game of life in lotus 123. My little brother wrote a Life in Turbo-Pascal that was so fast you had to slow it down to see it well.

It's interesting how you can start out coding it in a straightforward way, looking at the neighbor of each element in an array, simple but slow, and change to various increasingly cleverer techniques that look at fewer and fewer cells.
