[Mask tweet] They seem to have some curve-flatting effect. I don't think they will increase risky behavior. Even if they did, I doubt it overwhelms benefits. And even if it did, the message isn't receivable. Scared people want agency and this gives them to it.

Experts have to walk this tight rope between criticizing ill-supported statements because they can do incredible damage while also managing public perceptions of experts, which mostly means trust.

Anti-mask stuff in all forms spends trust. And trust is crazy expensive. Less expensive than first responders not having them. But home made masks don't factor in that allocation.

I’m actually not worried about first responders having them because they’re all gone anyway. I think the worry right now is social distancing efforts will diminish in favor of mask wearing alone which is less effective. 1/2

Promoting mask wearing promotes the false perception that the dominant mode of transmission is breathing in particles rather than touching surfaces. (Granted, if everybody wore cloth masks then sick people would and that does stop fomites from landing on surfaces.) 2/2

I could easily imagine a scenario where most feel protected because they wear masks and a subset of the people walk around not wearing masks, thinking it’s just about them, and their personal risk tolerance. Meanwhile the virus spreads to spread via surfaces to mask wearers. 3/n
