[Mask tweet] They seem to have some curve-flatting effect. I don't think they will increase risky behavior. Even if they did, I doubt it overwhelms benefits. And even if it did, the message isn't receivable. Scared people want agency and this gives them to it.

Experts have to walk this tight rope between criticizing ill-supported statements because they can do incredible damage while also managing public perceptions of experts, which mostly means trust.

Hey we’ve been following each other for a while now and I appreciate many of your tweets. Here, though, you just speculated with “I think” & “I doubt” statements in the same breath as talking about ill-founded statements & importance of trust. As a non-epidemiologist.

It’s normal for scared people to want agency, but fear is driving those ppl to hoard supplies others need, like surgical masks, which are *actually* needed by health care workers on the front lines. Facts should rule and we should be listening to qualified professionals on this.

This statement is about homemade masks but there is admitted collateral. But people are loudly pushing for them and experts aren't going to overcome the processes that will drive demand — government intervention is needed to do so.https://twitter.com/generativist/status/1244368538426429441 …

On a meta matter, I appreciate you reaching out because mutual-to-mutual criticisms are the only ones that have any hygienic value at all.
