[Mask tweet] They seem to have some curve-flatting effect. I don't think they will increase risky behavior. Even if they did, I doubt it overwhelms benefits. And even if it did, the message isn't receivable. Scared people want agency and this gives them to it.

I’m actually not worried about first responders having them because they’re all gone anyway. I think the worry right now is social distancing efforts will diminish in favor of mask wearing alone which is less effective. 1/2

Promoting mask wearing promotes the false perception that the dominant mode of transmission is breathing in particles rather than touching surfaces. (Granted, if everybody wore cloth masks then sick people would and that does stop fomites from landing on surfaces.) 2/2

I look at my homemade mask like this: no, it won't stop the virus like an N95. But it will stop me from touching my face and from coughing/spit fleck others by me and me by others. Dilution counts too.
