Dr. Jerome Adams was previously appointed Indiana State Health Commissioner by Governor Mike Pence. He initially opposed a needle-exchange programs on "moral" grounds. Months later, during the subsequent HIV epidemic, he changed his position at the CDC's behest.

Needle exchange isn't a moral or ethical predicament, it's a political one. But when it gets reported as such, it makes the political problems stronger. Trump nominated Adams as the Surgeon General and the Senate confirmed him on August 3rd, 2017.

I'm not sure how I'd evaluate his performance now. Saying "masks don't help" is going to be costly in terms of trust and serve as libertarian/conservative ammunition for further gutting gutted institutions. I think it was a terrible move.

It may have been bad info propagation. But it's also a statement made under some pretty extreme constraints including, again, the Trump Administrations catastrophic, politically-motivated inaction.

Such a lie may have been, on balance, a good bet for public health, allowing more resources to flow to first responders. But that calculus alone is evidence of some some deeply broken structures that need rebuilding.

Or I considered, a way not to make those without masks not get too panicky? And yes, the fact that medical staff effectively have to compete with the rest of us on the marketplace is itself sick.

The litany of considerations that go into it are vast and not even nuanced. Everyone's ignoring them because being lied to fucking sucks, especially when your scared. Even if the calculus were to show it saved a lot of lives, it still spends institutional trust and *should*.
