what if coronavirus as an excuse for both terrifying and deeply stupidly implemented mass surveillance is the alien threat, though

The expansion of surveillance terrifies me. So does absence of high-fidelity tracing. I have no answer. But I mostly think we'll get better results if the people who worry about the latter are working with the people who worry about the former. So I want to build brides.

I’m working on that, but the tech people really do need to realize that the privacy people have *very* legitimate fears and aren’t just being hysterical.

I agree with that 100%. I have no answers. My strategy lately has been *trying* to shift my amplification weight towards ppl who get it (and other things) that aren't in my in-group rather than on attacks. In a battle against tech optimism I think who gets ignored is predictable.

That makes sense. I’m largely focused on attacking because 1. Critique and improvement of disaster tech from an ethical perspective is what I do professionally in both research and writing work (and have been for years) BUT we do need focus/praise for not fucking up

And honestly I still feel that there’s a major issue with not-well informed reporters very credulously repeating totally BS tech claims around pandemic response without critiquing them or interrogating them (this is a huge issue with drones right now)

I guess OP didn't really have you in mind. It's *literally* what you work on, so it's high-signal stuff. And the breathless stuff is useless filler. "Tech got it right!" Okay but their info env did the heavy lifting though. Don't extrapolate too much?

The breathless filler is genuinely terrifying in that it leads people towards false technological hope - all the way up to Trump thinking that Silicon Valley will invent Uber ventilators or whatever because Jared Kushner said a thing

Yea. E.g. my parents yesterday told me, "did you hear what Elon musk did?" and my response was (to them), "right, fuck elon musk."

<comes running> Wait did someone say “fuck Elon Musk?” Because I am HERE for it.

My Mom did not feel similarly. No matter how old I am, she still gets upset when I curse which, as you can imagine, is difficult for me.

I wouldn’t last an hour in your house. Let’s just be glad we are not siblings.
