The media-tech war has gone on long enough. Stop fighting each other — it's self-reproducing noise. Keep your respective guns trained on the alien threat.

what if coronavirus as an excuse for both terrifying and deeply stupidly implemented mass surveillance is the alien threat, though

The expansion of surveillance terrifies me. So does absence of high-fidelity tracing. I have no answer. But I mostly think we'll get better results if the people who worry about the latter are working with the people who worry about the former. So I want to build brides.

I’m working on that, but the tech people really do need to realize that the privacy people have *very* legitimate fears and aren’t just being hysterical.

And honestly as someone who was paying attention before to tech in aid/disaster, quite a bit of these tech efforts look like “trying to aid-wash disaster to get what you want.” I need proof they’re willing to listen.

IE, it’s disquieting to me that lots of these projects look like extensions of creepy stuff tech companies were already doing but were previously constrained in rolling out due to laws or social disapproval...

I’m sure there is genuine desire to help in lots of places in tech but the #1 thing I want to see is humility and collaboration instead of more Tech Dudes sucking up all the oxygen in the room on topics they don’t understand.

I don't think we'll get humility. I desperately want collaboration. And for a million reasons, people in tech are mind-boggling bad at hearing criticism. So I'm trying to do social / collaborative rewiring because I think that has more effective bite.

Or, I'm making things worse. I really don't know. But the sheer amount of people mostly saying the same things while simultaneously acting antagonistically towards each other makes me think my *particular* role should be boundary spanning bridge building.

That would genuinely be appreciated because personally, having dealt with these issues for a long time, my ability to be nice to condescending techbros has hit an all time nadir
