Maybe? but I think it’s more subtle. Cloud reliability engineering is legit impressive... but I think it leads to data engineering monocroping

Cloud computing is both expensive, and its ephemeral nature means that I take it less seriously. Running stuff on my own hardware, knowing I'll have to deal with it if I fuck it up, makes me pay attention so much harder

That may be it. I started feeling more apprehensive once I bought an expensive rig...

We spent a lot of time and hard work to get away from the IBM "priesthood" and dumb terminals. Then, for some reason, people rushed back into it ("Computing is hard!" Hacker Barbie says) Won't get fooled again.

In my experience, cloud computing seems cheaper and less hassle, but it gets expensive fast which causes you to micromanage to keep costs down. Now suddenly, it's both expensive and a hassle and worst of all it feels intentionally engineering to be like that.

Imagine the salesman telling the company president, "... and all your valuable and confidential data will be stored on other people's computers!" How likely do you think they'd be to get the sale? Yet that is _exactly_ what cloud computing is.
