Among other things, COVID-19 leads me to redouble my faith in the sheer potential of social mediums. They’re flexible, mesh computer architectures for attention allocation with us as the nodes and — warts aside — they’re staggeringly powerful.

I don’t know how to reduce the fragility and awesome complexity of society. I mostly think we just move it around semi-haphazardly. But the printing press and everything after is capital-G Good in my book. Shared information sets us free.

Reducing fragility in a complex system is a form of annealing: heat the system to increase freedom of action & loose constraining structures; then cool down into a more efficient, higher entropy microstructure. System becomes more ductile & robust by dissipating internal tensions
