I really hate writing job/funding applications. Social media makes me feel as if I'm constantly surrounded by brilliant people doing brilliant things. So I feel less inhibited by a desire not to sound too boastful and more by what I think of self-awareness and realism.

OTOH social media also makes struggles and frustrations observable, at least for people who are honest (and I think of as worth following). Misleading "overnight" successes are still apparent. But I've also gotten to watch slow grinders for years finally make it, too.

All of this helps me remember that while applications aren't necessarily fictions, a lot of them are in some ways call options and you're supposed to sell someone on your upside potential. So it's okay to tell the story of who you are and want to be.
