I really have to stop asking people, "what's your loss function?" and just ask, "what does success mean to you?" Talk about shitty communication.

As in: like I'm trying to minimize my mean reprojection error? Isn't that all of us though?

Less about predictive processing, and more about politics. The gist being, politics / ideology is mostly arguments about which loss function to use, but people very rarely make trade-offs explicit, so we're all terminally arguing sideways.

I still think "be kind to each other" should be our highest principle. If any of our beliefs get in the way of that, it's a sign that something has gone awry somewhere in our mental ecosystem. Exemptions where people are not acting in good faith.

Yea, I always come back to that, even if I fail to act accordingly all the time. I think the paradox of tolerance binds far more loosely than people imagine but also that cultural pluralism is easy except for all the pluralism.
