Collaborative filtering is a class of algorithms used to solve the problem of insufficient demand from the perspective of whoever is doing the selling. It’s collaborative in a convoluted way, and filtering in a confused one. See also: Hastings Limit.

While this may often be true in practice, I disagree in principle, and think this view obscures the role collaborative filtering - done well - can play in broadening the set of viable producers (e.g. putting niche content in front of enough people who like it to make it viable).

Yep. Twitter's timeline "what you missed" recs I often find good. I also found the Instagram post on feed ranking interesting, claiming significant increase in likelihood to actually see posts from your close connections.
