Preference elicitation is very hard to do well because cognition is weirder than you think but thermometers for general approval/disapproval of an artificially isolated issue fails to measure tradeoffs — or, you know, politics.

"I'm socially-liberal, fiscally-conservative" is one of the absurd things people say that sounds reasonable because the tradeoff is rarely presented. Statements like, "I'd be willing to back gay marriage for at most a 0.001% increase in my taxes" would be more clarifying.
