We had one or two lockdown drills a year in high school. Now my hometown has one a month in elementary school. Just heard a story about a mother who asked to be notified ahead so she could keep her son home. He’s afraid of hallways now. Can’t imagine how much damage we’re doing.

I can’t personally compare the two from experience but — while nuclear annihilation drills seem so much more profoundly stupid — lockdown drills seem so much more deeply corrosive. “Don’t trust the reds” versus “don’t trust Steve.”
