It's not a lossless compression but people who imagine that "people used to be more respectful [of other people]" and "they didn't know any better back then [about, say, slavery]" really summarizes a huge swath of American mythology.

It's also the ultimate form of PC (not just in the US). We're bathed in a socializing sea of "land of the free and home of the brave"-variants. It's the thing that must never be questioned. And most people don't, so they respond as if you pissed on their father's grave if you do.
