Cooled take: Likes as stochastic retweets was a good idea. It has good ambient intimacy properties.

Ooh, I'd love to discuss this more. I've been thinking a lot about asymmetric intimacy, especially with podcasts. I once saw Terry Gross interview Ira Glass, and he spoke about that a little bit; there's something about sound that feels personal.

But, then I realized, the signal is actually pretty strong and useful because it lets you say "I see you" (like in your gif) but also lets other people know you're nodding at something. Not RT-level power; but still, it surfaces some hard-to-surface preferences.

I want that because it's good ambient intimacy. For example, somehow
@MaureenBug and I slowly got to know each other because of like-entanglement. And that's great because we got to meet and she's a delight (who needs to take me tidepooling eventually)!https://twitter.com/hypatiadotca/status/1191157202339254272 …💥 (wannabe) Ƀreaker of (the Bad) Loops 💫 added,

So while I think it should be disable-able (and believe its there mostly to pump more engagements) it's actually a really good social discovery mechanism.

I’m also quietly pro likes-as-retweets tbqh. I’ve been thinking lately that there’s kind of a smooth gradient between ambient intimacy and parasocial intreractions, also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parasocial_interaction …

Leigh -- we don't interact much on here but everytime I do I learn something extremely useful to me.pic.twitter.com/GMTQfDmJh1
