Mailing list thread: https://bugs.python.org/issue15873 Commit:https://github.com/python/cpython/commit/09dc2f508c8513e0466a759cc27a09108c1e55c2 …
Okaaayy...what's the point of standards if people don't actually follow them? And it only took them 30 years and to version 3.7 to actually even bother to kinda? (ISO 8861 being 6 years older than python). I don't mean to be harsh; these are volunteers. I can see leaving out..
..specific features on the way. But sometimes volunteerism can be a bit undisciplined, and python has more of its share. Given its popularity, it deserves a bit more What I would expect at a minimum is a documented commitment to parse all valid ISO 8861 dates except ordinal & wk
And I suspect they actually implemented that! But the weasel statement in the doc basically says you can't actually use it as an ISO 8861 parser at all, because all we guarantee is roundtripping. People need ISO 8861 parsing. So close...
And actually, what's so hard about ordinal and week? They may not be that useful, but there's a lot of value in being able to say "we support ISO 8861".
I'm much more frustrated that I couldn't previously do, date.fromisoformat(datetime.isoformat())
There is that! I try to stay away from python due to stuff like this. I find the Javascript world to be more robust. Instead of Jupyter notebooks, I've started using http://ObservableHQ.com Javascript based, executes in your browser, more interactive.
d3 / those folks are cool. If you are doing python datetime stuff though, this is robust AF https://dateutil.readthedocs.io/en/stable/
That looks pretty good; I'll keep it in mind should I need to do it in python. It lacks a strict ISO parser; sometimes you don't want permissive parsers. If I had to pick one or the other, though, I'd go with permissive and do my own validation.
