Now I don’t know at what level of discourse we’re disconnected lol. I mean that it’s clear Trump’s statements cannot be taken literally. Attacking them at the object level just looks increasingly naive. He’s an entertainer. A showboater. He can’t be beaten with

Ah yes — you nailed it. That is the primary reason why conservatives pretend not to get it. “It’s just words.” “He’s just trolling.” As if the POTUS deliberately weilding power by means of maximizing polarization was fine, actually. God-tier delusions.

Okay I see. When I say “pretend not to get it” I mean liberals who make the
face every time he says something outrageous.
We *all know* he’s a unqualified blowhard. It’s not shocking.
Biting the bullet on being trolled will never work. That’s just begging for 4 more years.2 replies 0 retweets 0 likes -

He’s executing an exploit. Telling everyone “stop being exploited” tries to patch society instead of the persistent and easily identifiable Malory. Nonsense.

If I pointed a gun at your gun, you’d be dumb not to duck. If I pulled the trigger and laughed knowing it was unloaded, the threat was still real.

I agree that constant amplification works in his favor — that’s the whole exploit. And strategically it is better to set the agenda instead of responding to it. But that’s not to feasible (although it’s a problem I’m trying to help with)

Telling an entire sub population they need to act differently in response to one malevolent actor is tilting at windmills.

Oh do you mean it’s just as silly for me to expect the Outrage Crew not to get Outraged?

I’m saying people should be outraged by deliberately outrageous things and ignoring him is only a viable solution if everyone does it so it’s not.

But none of this is tractable. We’re all just hanging on. I don’t know what the correct mix of outrage and counter agenda control is. I think you’re right in that it’s too much on the former.

Even more than that the unthreatened beneficiaries need to stand up and say, “yea guys a monster tearing at society in terrible ways.” But same problem — they’re not going to do so so it’s a useless prescription.
