Both I and my neighbor wake up early each day. I sit at kitchen table; she walks outside... ...and looks in my window when she passes ...and locks eyes with me. Neither of us acknowledges each other. We've never met. I have no coping mechanisms for suburban life.

My neighbor and I exchanged awkward gestures of acknowledgments for two whole years until I got a dog who ran over to say hello one day, thus serving as the icebreaker. We are now great friends and told each other how we felt the entire time, we laugh thinking back on it.
