Both I and my neighbor wake up early each day. I sit at kitchen table; she walks outside... ...and looks in my window when she passes ...and locks eyes with me. Neither of us acknowledges each other. We've never met. I have no coping mechanisms for suburban life.

My small complex here in S. Africa is pretty reserved, & I have mostly international neighbors. Cookies at Xmas for the families that are here yielded a traditional Mexican dessert and a traditional Japanese snack in return. Food is a decent ice breaker.

Do it. That IS the coping mechanism. PS I love banana bread. With butter. Lots of butter.

I am suddenly so sad for and worried about you now. Both of you. Holy hell say hi. In the 10 months we’ve lived in this house, we’ve spoken to most neighbors, invited some over, had a dinner with some, been to a birthday party, etc.
