Spotify has struck me as the sweet spot between automated and human curation. Social sharing of human made playlists is there, album artist, and composer are organization options, and the algorithms are free to learn non-obvious relationships from the human curated meta data.

I never liked the premise of Pandora’s music genome project. Pandora focused too much on technical similarities in music and sonic palette, which is fine for scholarship, but automates away novelty, alternate versions, collaboration, and social factors that need human curation.
