Hot take (for something I know *nothing about*): If WIFI was a generally available mesh resource for devices with constantly spoofed MAC-addresses and PID-free payments, how often would you need a cell phone as opposed to "a device"?

There has been some movement here. AT&T's "WiFi calling" in tandem with their cell service. Republic Wireless is built around the concept of "WiFi First". I think going WiFi *only* just leaves too many dark zones. But there is more progress to be made.

Yea, definitely not a universal solution. But even with xfinity hotspots, back in San Jose I could go days with airplane mode + wifi with zero problems.
