I worded my tweet poorly in that I do enjoy kubernetes a lot and it aligns well with my almost pathological need to attempt to decompose things. I just really need to get outside more and all the imagery reminds me of that. ,,,gotta start surfing I guess?

I realized like 2 weeks ago the whole Port -> Docker/Container theme
I dont know when or why “port number” overtook “socket number” but I’m curious now. -
Real-time thinking out loud... “container” predates Docker and has natural etymology, container+port -> dock(er) is pretty clear. Physical “ports” predate sockets (afaik), but I can’t find anything on the history of the term with a quick google.

We must have wildly different experiences with it

The secret I've found to enjoying k8s is: 1. learn the weird hierarchy of models first, many tutorials get this wrong and just tell you "make a pod" or "make a deployment" 2. spin up 3 useful things right away: external-dns, cert-manager, nginx ingress

It’ll be abstracted out yet again to something simpler or replaced completely within years. All those making whole careers on top of that single piece of tech will be sorely disappointed.
