funnily enough, given the rise and fall of disc media and laser diodes being surpassed in efficiencies by LED, we might have lived through the peak absolute laser usage already.

Whenever I explain my lab equipment (flow cytometry, microscopy, qPCR, sequencer) I say "and this big laser box measures...."

The bit with the laser in my LC-MS/MS was removed as it was obsolete. This may be a specific example of why there's less of a technology that was futuristic in the 1950s around.
