Been rewatching the original Star Wars movies this weekend (because yeah) and I can’t stop thinking about how unintentionally sad that whole universe is. It’s just not a good place, people are enslaved, there’s misery and loss everywhere, and no one seems to care.

Like the Blade Runner universe is fundamentally broken, that comes through from PKD’s gnosticism, the sense that the world is not right, that’s entirely intentional. Star Wars is just, Lucas wanted to make some cool adventure backdrops and accidentally put his characters in hell.

It’s extra weird because The Force is one of the most utopian sf concepts ever. Yoda’s speech about it still gives you chills. (From a muppet!) But its transformative potential is almost entirely wasted.

So given JJ “Mystery Box” Abrams’ track record with like things, there’s little reason to be optimistic. But yes I’ll still buy my ticket and take the ride.

I’ll stop, but the basic principle should be pretty simple: if you’re not using The Force for the liberation of others, then you’re on the Dark Side. (This is maybe the nerdiest thing I’ve ever posted)
