Social proof is a helluva drug. Stop at a corner and stair up at the sky then watch as everyone else does it. Trends are that but for looking down at the ground at some dogshit.

I thought so too, but now I think Twitter would be substantially worse without "trends". Collectively witnessing things makes people form bonds. These types of things become part of people's cultural history, and these get reused later (eg: feral hogs jokes between friends)
-
I think they would still occur in dense cliques a lot more organically. And I do think you’re right that the shared context is useful in general. My problem is mostly the degree — so much constant and intense synchronization.

I never look at tending. It’s too much of a rhythm break. And I don’t seem to miss anything important. Also I just spelled rhythm so badly that spell check couldn’t even help. Took me three tries just to get a relevant suggestion.

Yes! (And I have a service I’m writing called rhythm and
@GoLandIDE corrects me constantly lol)

My trending location is set to Tokyo, so all of this is whatever fills up my timeline “organically”

Gonna do one more of these threads for 2020, then in 2021 I’m likely going to disregard and ignore trends entirely to focus on nerdposting (if Twitter hasn’t broken my user experience completely by then)
