If you are an academic, do you use anything for text indexing to make subsequent searching easier (either over PDFs or some corpus you're working with?)

More like that, yes. I never really had anything more sophisticated for that than spotlight search. And for analyzing documents and such, I tended to load things into memory and just search in jupyter.

Oh oh oh. have you tried ripgrep? cd into the directory of docs rg “phrase” All matches with line numbers will show up in a blink of an eye. Fastest search out there, makes spotlight look like a joke. If you want to save matches to file, use “> outfile.txt” at the end.
