Some I can piece together from things I've written. For example, I think I've been so vocally angry at conservatives because I used to be one (libertarian) and 2016 was me suddenly finding out that a lot of my beliefs as to their principles were laughably naive and self-serving.

But, most just keep receding from memory and emotional accessibility. And given how affective processing works, I don't think I can even correctly access not-so-distant me accurately. Unless your absurdly meticulous, yester-you is gone.

Yea, you can function without it. But it also means you may fail to learn from some mistakes because you miss the lesson before it's gone.
