Can someone point to me to the *best* explanation of — or at least defense for — why cable network should have a regular cast of rotating "contributor" characters (paid or not) if their goal is to facilitate the dissemination of news?

Some of them do have those backgrounds. But I think it leaves a big space open for political operatives to sneak in, and that the population of people willing to hang around green rooms and get canceled on for breaking news favors pro media people and folks with books to sell.

I know I've seen people with science expertise (especially women, who are held to high appearance standards) say it's a bad use of time because the networks don't treat them well. So I think it was an okay idea that drifted to bad places?
