It's not that tech people need to be *taught* social science it's that a lot of those who happen to be building social systems aren't too curious about them…with the exception of learning stuff that allows them to wring out more salable "value" like friendship gamification.

This is snarky but it's also just an accurate summary of the incentives. Second-order effects are second order, and in a highly-competitive arena with a very narrow sense of time, those who care about them get slowly squeezed out by those who do not.
