Confession: Most of the things I've written that were well-received never started out with anything resembling a thesis statement or a outline or anything — it was just me writing things down to figure out what I think not what I want to say.

If the structure of a statement or outline is useful to you, by all means use it! But it never was for me and I wish I had teachers much earlier in my life who recognized that — I could have realized I love writing a long time ago.

Oh and also, check out @HemingwayApp. I use it a lot in general, but it's really good for me when I'm trying to think because it feels like a linter and gently pressures me to state things simply.
