It’s supposed to act as an extension of ourselves. Perhaps it could rightfully be assumed that it *should* therefore reflect our values and thus, as actionable equivalents, our morals. Unfortunately, it also reflects our faults: Short-term gains at the expense of long-term goals.

At the risk of sounding contrite, we use it like a hammer. One of my overriding beliefs is that transitional periods may not look anything like the end state we desire in a society, but still must be attained. Bludgeoning your opponents doesn't do that.
