I don't get the tech community perspective on security. Anybody could pick up a knife and go stab anybody. Anybody can go kick in somebody's door when they are not home. The deterrent is getting caught not the impossibility of attacking.

I think for the tech community the social/punitive aspect is less emphasized because it’s less enforceable in virtual spaces. If I leave my router unpatched, I’ll be exploited in minutes and I’ll probably never know who or why.

I don't think that the undectable exploitation of your router is a universal property of all possible internets. It's just a property of the one we chose to build with its terrible social norms and tendency toward libertarianism.

Maybe. But for routing to work the way it does I think it's almost an intrinsic component if not very hard to separate "Paranoid IT security" is a redundant phrase.

I think what I'm saying John is ... all we need is love. Love. Love is all we need.
