Quick question for educators: Why was reading out loud ever a thing in school? I don’t have any trouble doing so, yet I hated it. And people who did struggle had to struggle visibly. How was this a thing?

Absolutely: being good at it was next to complicity in making other kids feel like crap. They used to make the class line up once a week in order of how we'd done in our tests... Every week it was me or this one other kid publicly praised for some arbitrary and pointless aptitude
