Talking about the problems with social media in terms of addiction is a problem for lots of reasons but the main one for me is that it allows people to look right at an issue and miss the harm because their resolution is way too fine.

I’ve sort of wandered into this, but it’s something I’ve been thinking about for a year or so—my big issue is not just that this stuff is addictive but that it’s intentionally engineered to be so (intentionally harmful).

So to me, it’s deeply unethical to continue working for Facebook, Twitter, all these places creating this stuff. Why is the timeline so frustrating to use? I can’t imagine it’s incompetence—it’s likely working as designed.
