I love popsci. Really, I do — I've written about it. But lately I've been thinking that "well, actually" born of popsci spelunking is symptomatic of how many authors present knowledge at the rhetorical intersection of recently acquired, comprehensive, and incontrovertible.

There’s an intimidating amount of academic scicomm literature about how falsely presenting certainty made the BSE crisis in the UK several times worse. But that literature isn’t accessible to most people, so we keep making the same mistakes.
