Friend: Why'd you do a PhD? Did you want to contribute to Science (TM)? Me: Ostensibly, yes. But mostly, my need to know about pretty much anything of at least moderate complexity that I become aware of borders on compulsion. A PhD is a socially-acceptable way to satisfy that.

I know quite a few people with ADD/ADHD in academia, but it can definitely make formal study difficult. I don’t think academia is a particularly accessible environment for neurodiverse folks (though don’t have ADD/ADHD, so YMMV).

Yea. I think there is a selective pressure for people with ADD/ADHD towards academia that academia has not adapted to. But, academia in general is pretty sclerotic, so...
