So, at 200 billion tweets per year, just storing the 240 characters of text alone (assuming fixed width) is 48 terabytes. I guess I never fully appreciated that scale before...

I manage an app that globally stores ~6 PBs of data. Captures, indexes and stores raw internet and corporate traffic (about 30 days worth). Currently valued at <$5M dollars.

6PB is substantial! I usually live in a world of terabytes and call that "big data". Last I heard, Twitter was sitting on 300PB of data. That's pretty intense.
