is there a word like "repair" that suggests improving on something, but - doesn't imply that the original state was broken - doesn't imply that the new state is superior ? seems unlikely but it's worth exploring

Hormesis is *almost* there. I have calluses on my palms from lifting weights which are adaptive in that context but useless at best in pretty much all others.
