I think a lot of clever sounding things just state ambiguity problems. Like, ways of saying “it’s either this or that but it’s very hard to tell” in a way that, for some reason, seems profound because of its paired specificity.

But it’s all the same problem: even if you know what and who you’re prepared to sacrifice for this or that, you still need to make inferences over an impossibly complicated, noisy, and non-stationary world, which is really ducking hard.
