If you are a #python user, how many environments are on your workstation?
Not: do you use both virtualenv and conda, but how many environments have you set up using whatever package isolation tool(s) you prefer.

I kind of want to learn Python just so I can understand half your tweets

As a political scientist, what do you think would be the biggest benefit to me of learning Python? I'm actively considering it though it's still relatively rarely used in this R-based field

I've written moderate-sized projects in about a dozen languages and book-level "learned" about a dozen more. For my day-to-day work, I love everything about python. That said, for political science, you'll get just as much mileage out of R. Or more, since it's dominant there.

The one thing about R for my field is it's woefully deficient (unless things changed in the last year) for text analysis. People just use Stata for it cause it's that bad. I'm thinking Python could be useful there at least

We also tend to lag a generation behind CSS folks in terms of which program is commonly taught, which makes me think I'll be having to learn Python to teach in a decade or less anyway, so why wait

<nod>, Python is starting to gain rapidly on R for this sort of reason--text manipulation is pretty dang easy/powerful in Python. The pandas package is very R-like, IIUC, so it should be a fairly comprehensible transition.

If you have any text recs for teaching it to yourself that are geared towards people who aren't natural coders, that would be lovely

Ack, I wish I did, but I don't -- I've been noodling at programming since high school (late 90s), so my perspective on approaching as a new learner is completely blown.
There are a couple of people I could put you in touch with that might, though. DM me your email?2 replies 0 retweets 2 likes
(Mine is too and I really would like to have a good set of resources to forward someone to.)
