Being an adult means knowing no one is coming to save you and you are not owed anything for doing the right thing. It’s pretty exhausting.

I don't think I believe this. I wouldn't be alive if it weren't for the people who support me, and I strive to be that person for them too. Becoming an adult shouldn't be like walking into the Cursed Earth, right?

Well, the left implicit part was "and doing it anyway," putting away acting as child. People who do so hold up their families, communities, and the world really.

Sure, but I don't think what you mentioned were childish things.

Oh, I see what you mean now. I'm in the same place. I would not be here without the (many) people who have supported me. And I learned to do the same for them, out of love or friendship or, just, character. And expecting *that* isn't childish, no.

Change OP from "being an adult means" to "part of being an adult means having gone through experiences where no one could save you but you do the right thing anyway, even though you knew it cost you dearly and there would be no compensation."

That may be closer to what I want to say (albeit longer). It's not the defining characteristic of being an adult, just a component of it. And, it's not applicable to all contexts, just some of them. Mostly, it's a long way of saying, Sacrifice is h a r d.
