Being an adult means knowing no one is coming to save you and you are not owed anything for doing the right thing. It’s pretty exhausting.

Change OP from "being an adult means" to "part of being an adult means having gone through experiences where no one could save you but you do the right thing anyway, even though you knew it cost you dearly and there would be no compensation."

That may be closer to what I want to say (albeit longer). It's not the defining characteristic of being an adult, just a component of it. And, it's not applicable to all contexts, just some of them. Mostly, it's a long way of saying, Sacrifice is h a r d.
