I have a good relationship with my parents precisely because I got to live on a different continent for some time. Now I'm "only" 100 miles away. If we lived in the same city for the whole time, we'd never had a chance to have a good relationship at all.

They're still in NJ, I went back to the Bx. Now I plan on moving across the country. While I gave it a lot of thought given that they're all I got left in terms of family-- I'm at the point of my life where I can easily go between the coasts and/or send for them.

Yea, that's kinda critical for me. I moved to SJ because my wife got her dream job here as well as semi-nearby parents, but it wouldn't have been something I could do without the SJC
EWR route. (I feel guilty flying so much though...) - 1 more reply

I agree. It’s a shame. I’m really torn about not living in the same city as my mom. My best friend and I were just talking about how at this point in our lives we just want to live in a big compound with both of our families.
