A Short Stay in Hell is by Steven Peck is such a good read. One of those books I’ve regularly thought about regularly since reading it (and that was a few years ago!!)

@andrewheiss recommended it and I brought it to the beach...but my nephews kept me to busy!

I'm sorry, there are non-academic books? What kind of sorcery is this?

I went and looked at my list of reading to answer this question. And then I closed it feeling sad. Lots of books that were fine, or did the job, but things that really sparkle and stand out? Sadly lacking lately.

The Amateurs by
@lizharmer! Honestly, not sure if it has appeared on any bestsellers lists, but it’s a fantastic read. I’ve definitely spent a lot of time thinking about it in relation to current start-up/tech culture.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Empire of Cotto, by Sven Beckert. Great history on the global rise of cotton, with a focus on the economics generally, and American slavery in particular. A “must read” for anyone who wants to dig deeper into the black diaspora in America.
