Blows my mind how many people don't get this and just lazily call it a FB or Twitter problem. Go talk to people running Sharechat in India! Tech's latest fun obsession TikTok has bad shit too! Even Tumblr has them! Guess what's common in all of these websites?https://twitter.com/benedictevans/status/1162453557771030528 …

Calling it a twitter or facebook problem is lazy, even when you don’t mean it in an exclusive sense. I’m prone to doing so myself. But every platform that wins in getting market share generally has incentives that induce a race to the bottom of what is salience.

Simplifying, you have densely-connected communication architectures that rely on synchronization — via trends or preferential attachment induced big accounts — with no attention given to signal attenuation, only amplification. An endless social seizure.

It’s this same pattern replicated endlessly with minor variations in the medium because it works at getting eyeball share and Metcalfe’s Law is like the Great Filter for healthy computer-mediated communications.

I do think there are viable architectures. And Im prototyping a social immune system layer for twitter that works with its grossly restrictive API to reshape things a bit on here. But if the spoils go to SNSs that entertain the most, we’re stuck a/b testing incrementally better.
